How To Get Rid Of Stubborn Ice Dams

Icicles may be pretty to look at but they won’t be so pretty when they tear down your gutters. Snow covered roofs and frigid temperatures are the perfect recipe for ice dams, and if you don’t take care of them right away, you’ll be sorry.

Rochester, NY is notorious for its freezing winters and unfathomable amounts of snowfall. While heat collects in your attic and warms your roof, the eaves are neglected and this is where ice dams form. In an event that we get a warm day followed by another cold day, the snow on your roof can melt and refreeze and as this process happens over and over, ice dams become larger and heavier.

So how can you prevent the load from getting too heavy? We don’t recommend hacking away with a hammer or chisel as this can damage your roof. There are a few quick fixes which involve blowing cool air from inside your attic to the underside of the roof or using an aluminum rake to pull the snow off of your roof. But these are only temporary solutions and won’t put an end to the problem. The best solution is to add roof heat tape which should be turned on when the temperature dips below freezing.

For more information about roof heat tape give Lon Lockwood Electric a call. We’d be glad to walk you through the process and discuss the perfect solution for your home.
