Eliminate Ice Dams With Roof Heat Tape

Monroe County, NY is notorious for receiving large sums of snowfall each winter. As snow accumulates on your roof, melts and then re-freezes at your eaves and gutters ice dams are formed which can be detrimental to your roof and gutters. How can you fix this problem and avoid the buildup of heavy ice blocks on your roof? The answer is heat tape.

One of the main causes of ice damming is inadequate insulation. If you experience ice blocks underneath the snow on your roof or find icicles hanging from your gutters, chances are high that there is not enough insulation in your attic.

Heat tape, or heat wire, will help to melt ice build-up on your roof to eliminate the risk of leaks for years to come. Heat tape should be installed by a professional, like our certified electricians at Lon Lockwood Electric, and should be connected to a GFI (ground fault interrupter) outlet so that they heat up where the tape is touching the ice. Once the ice and snow on the roof is melted, the heat tape should be turned off.
