Did you know that home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year? This comes with nearly 500 deaths, 1,400 injuries and nearly $1.3 billion in property damage.
In order to protect yourself and your family from a major electrical disaster, we’ve put together a list of 3 common causes of home electrical fires below.
- Faulty Wires: think about how your daily electrical usage differs from that of your parents and then compare that to your grandparents. With the widespread use of technology these days, electrical demands are much higher than they once were. If you still have old, damaged or inadequate wiring in your home, you’re putting your family at risk. Check for blown fuses, lights that dim when you turn on another electrical device and never use multiple extension cords off of one outlet.
- Heating Devices: using a space heater as an additional heat source this winter? This is another one of the most common causes of electrical home fires. Be sure to keep at least three feet of space clear around the heater and never use them to dry laundry, shoes or any other items that could catch fire.
- Kitchen Appliances: Not using your toaster oven or coffee machine at the moment? Unplug them. Appliances can overheat and cause a fire for a variety of reasons including damaged wires or overloaded outlets.
