How To Choose The Right Sized Air Conditioner

Sketches of Air ConditionersShopping for a new room air conditioner this summer? Be sure to look for the ENERGY STAR label. As temperatures heat up, an energy efficient cooling system is a great way to cool down while keeping some green in your wallet. But it’s important to make sure you buy an air conditioner that’s sized correctly for the room it’s going to be cooling down.

Here are a few tips to get you headed in the right direction:

  1. Find out the square footage of the room – it only takes a few simple math calculations. Multiplying the length by the width of the room will suffice for square and rectangular rooms and remember, 3 inches = .25 ft., 6 inches = .5 ft. and 9 inches = .75 ft.
  2. Now it’s time to find the correct cooling capacity. If the room is 100-150 square feet, you’re going to need a 5,000 BTU unit. For every additional 100 feet, increase BTUs by 1,000.
  3. You may need to make some adjustments depending on how the room is set up. If it doesn’t receive much sun, you can reduce BTU capacity by 10% and the opposite is true for rooms that receive sunlight all day long. It’s also important to consider where the unit is going to be installed. If it’s going in a corner, make sure it has the ability to blow air in right direction.

Abiding by these guidelines can help you save a fortune on energy bills this summer. Keep in mind that a system that’s too large or too small for the specified area can come with some major costs and nobody wants that!
