4 Common Household Electrical Problems Explained

Burnt Outlet CoverNo matter how old your home is, there’s a number of common electrical problems that show warning signs before the problem becomes major. Knowing what to look out for can prevent you and your family members from becoming another electrical house fire statistic. We’re going to lay it out for you in plain English below so you can notify an expert electrician before it’s too late.

  1. Electrical Shocks: ever feel a shock or a tingle when you touch an appliance, outlet or light switch? This could mean there is a problem with the ground fault or the wiring. Keep in mind that static shocks are common during the winter months and are not a cause for concern, but if you get shocked when touching electrical devices that’s another story.
  2. Overlamping: this happens when you put a light bulb into a fixture that has a wattage than the fixture is designed for. For example, a light bulb with a 60w rating should never be put into a fixture that has a maximum limit of 40w. The same theory applies to LED bulbs. This scenario can cause intense heat and sparks which can lead to an electrical fire.
  3. Not Enough Outlets: ever run into a problem where you need to plug in additional electronic devices but don’t have enough free outlet space to do so? You might find yourself reaching for another extension cord or a power strip. While using a power strip isn’t necessarily a problem, just make sure you’re not plugging more than one strip into another. The proper here would be to add more outlets, however.
  4. Warm Fixtures: notice that the wall or ceiling around your fixtures is warmer than it should be? Again, this can be a result of overlamping or a problem with the wires behind the drywall. If you’ve checked to make sure the appropriate bulb is in place, call in an electrician to check out the problem.
