We’re hanging on to the pleasant weather we’re having for as long as physically possible, but we all know how quickly temperatures can change here in the Rochester area. With that said, fall is just about here and it’s time to start thinking about how you can save energy this season. Here are a few DIY projects you should be completing around your home in the upcoming weeks to help keep some green in your wallet. After all, since temperatures are quite warm you’ve got no excuse!
Seal Up Windows & Doors
A little bit of caulk or weatherstripping goes a long way when it comes to saving on energy bills. During the cooler months, lots of warm air from inside your home escapes through cracks and gaps around windows and doors and causes your heating system to work harder than it should.
Clean The Fridge
We’re not necessarily talking about the inside here, we’re talking about cleaning the outside. Vacuum the coils on the back or on the bottom because adequate airflow helps it run more efficiently. It’s also a good idea to check the temperature setting. It should read somewhere around 40°F which is optimal for food safety, but it’s not too cold where you’re wasting electricity.
Putting outdoor lights on a timer is a wonderful way to ensure you’re not wasting energy. There’s no reason to have them running while it’s light outside – and remember to adjust the timers for daylight savings.
Check On Your Thermostat
Now is the perfect time of year to adjust temperature settings. You may need to reset the programmed times and temperatures to align with desired comfort levels this season.
