How does saving $130 or more on energy bills each year sound? Pretty good, right? Well, now that the kids are back in school and things are finally settling down after the hustle and bustle of summer, it’s time to sit down with your family and devise an energy-conservation plan. Ready to get started?
Start With The Family Room…
This is an area of the house that gets lots of use from everyone. Oftentimes, family rooms include many electronics like the TV, video game consoles, DVR and stereo systems that all use lots of energy:
- Limit weekday video game time. It’s important for your children to be focusing on homework or studying for upcoming exams rather than immersing themselves in video games for hours on end. On top of that, homework and studying requires very little electricity, if any at all!
- Turn the TV and other electronic devices off while they’re not being used. For smaller electronics, you may even want to unplug them until the next time you need to use them.
Move On To The Bedrooms…
Children also tend to spend lots of time in their bedroom. With that said, many rooms these days include computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones and televisions, not to mention chargers for all of these devices:
- Keep an eye on what your children are doing once they go to their rooms. Are they spending hours on their computers or cell phones before they fall asleep?
- Remind them to unplug chargers and devices when they’re not in use.
Taking the time to sit down with your family to create a plan will not only help you save on energy bills, it’s a great way to spend some quality time together, too!
