Summer is coming to an end and that means it’s back to school time. If your kids aren’t already sitting in a classroom, they will be in a matter of days and with that said, let’s make this back to school season as green as possible. By making just a few small changes and keeping an eye out for certain features, you and your family can save both energy and money.
Sending your young adults off to college? They’re going to need things like laptops and televisions for their dorm rooms. Look for the Energy Star label on these types of devices and you can help save nearly 75% in energy consumption. It’s also a good idea to remind them to turn off and unplug devices while they’re not being used and remember to turn the lights off when they leave the dorm.
Savings at Home
While there’s only so much you can do to help your children stay “green” while they’re at school, you have much more control over your own home. Now that the kids are back in school and you’re back at work, remember that electricity costs vary by the time of day:
- You will likely benefit from using appliances during the evening – save laundry and running the dishwasher until after dinner rather than doing it in the morning.
- Re-adjust your thermostat based on your family’s academic and work schedule. You probably don’t need to have your central air system running all day long with nobody home and with the weather cooling down you may be able to turn it off altogether.
