Boating and Marina Safety: The Electrical Edition

buoy on waterfrontThere’s nothing better than spending a beautiful summer day out on the water. Cruising along on a boat with friends and family can either scream fun or relaxation – whichever you prefer. But there are lots of potential dangers you need to be aware of before you set sail this summer.

See below to find out how to keep your family safe:

  • Never swim near the boat, marina, or launch ramp. Why? Electrical current could be flowing through the water putting anyone in the water at risk.
  • GFCIs and ELCIs should be tested monthly to make sure they’re working properly. Have an expert check for leakage.
  • Never use household electrical cords near the water. Use shore power cords, including Y adapters and make sure they’re UL-Marine Listed.
  • It’s important to know where your main breaker(s) are located on the boat and always check for power lines before taking off.

Docks and boats can carry sources of electricity. Faulty wiring or the use of damaged electrical cords and other devices can cause the surrounding water source to become energized. Be sure to obey all safety signs and be alert at all times while boating.
