Holiday Lighting Tips: Episode 1

Thanksgiving is behind us, those sleigh bells are jingling and it’s officially the holiday season. That means it’s time to get outside and decorate your home. Whether you choose to go all out or believe that simple LED lights will do, there’s lots of things that can go wrong if you’re not careful. So, before you get up on that ladder read the holiday lighting safety tips below:

  • Using the same lights you’ve been putting up for years? You may want to inspect the strings. Look for frayed or cracked electrical cords, damaged wires or broken sockets. Get rid of any light strings that are not in excellent condition.
  • If you’re planning on connecting multiple strands in order to cover the entire exterior, be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions. In most cases, there strings is the limit.
  • We all know how frustrating it can be when bulbs blow out or do not light up. But you should never leave them alone. Empty sockets can cause the entire string of lights to overheat.
  • Using a staple hammer to affix lights or decorations to the roof or facade? Be sure to avoid stapling through wires as this can cause serious electrical problems.
  • Check all outdoor lights and decorations to make sure they are UL-rated for outdoor use.
  • Never use interior lights outside as they are not meant to deal with the elements.

Happy holidays from our family to yours! And remember, if you need an electrician in your Rochester home this holiday season, you can always count on the experienced professionals at Lon Lockwood Electric!
