How To Repair A Hole In The Wall

Whether you were moving furniture and accidentally put a hole in the wall with a chair leg or you attempted to tackle an electrical project and needed to access wires behind the wall, you now have a hole that needs to be repaired. After all, it’s something every homeowner should be able to tackle as you’ll likely have to patch drywall at some point during your life. See below where you’ll find out that it’s actually easier than you may have thought:

Patching A Small Hole

  • Take a putty knife and put a small amount of spackle toward the end. Press it into the hole or dent.
  • If it sinks into the wall or hole, you may need to apply multiple layers. The key is to make it flush with the rest of the wall.
  • Once the spackle dries, use a sanding sponge to smooth it out and then use some touch-up paint to make it look pretty.

Patching A Medium-Sized Hole

  • Head to your local home improvement store and look for self-adhesive metal patching. They come in a variety of sizes and can be cut to the exact size you need.
  • Remove the sticky backing and place the patch over the hole.
  • Cover the entire patch and a small area around the patch with joint compound using a putty knife. Once this first layer dries, use your putty knife to scrape away any jagged areas.
  • Apply a second layer of joint compound spreading it even a bit further than the first layer. You’ll want to work towards tapering the compound so that it spreads out thin and blends in with the rest of the wall.
  • Finally, use a sanding sponge to smooth it all out and then use touch-up paint to make it look pretty.

Patching A Large Hole

  • Measure the size of the hole and cut a spare piece of drywall to fit inside the hole.
  • Screw scrap pieces of wood along the edges of the hole (on the inside of the wall) so that you’ll have something to secure the drywall patch to.
  • Fit the patch into the hole and screw it to the secure pieces of wood inside the hole.
  • Cover the seams with drywall tape and apply joint compound over the patch and the surrounding areas.
  • Use a sanding sponge to smooth the area and then use touch-up paint to make it look pretty.
