The Importance of Upgrading Your Rochester Home’s  Electrical Panel

Electrical Panel Upgrade - Circuit BreakerOnce electricity is carried beyond your meter, it must be distributed to lights, receptacles, and appliances throughout the house by several different electrical circuits. The electrical panel is the main distribution point for this electric current.

For the homeowner, the main electrical panel is attached between the electric meter and the wall outlets in the home. Inside that electrical panel are the circuit breakers or, in much older homes, fuses, which control the amount of electricity that flows through each wiring circuit and powers all the lighting and appliances in your home.

The probability is high that the electrical panel box in your home is a builder’s grade aluminum-based panel box. What that means to you is that the copper wiring that goes from the panel box through the home is connected to aluminum wiring inside your panel box. This is an inherently unsafe situation and can cause electrical arcing and fires.

If you have one of these builder’s grade boxes in your home, you’re harboring a safety hazard. It’s essential to have this panel box evaluated as soon as possible and, if found to be hazardous, have it replaced with a more modern and much safer copper-based panel box.

See What Your Neighbors Are Saying

“Buying a new EV and our existing panel in an older home couldn’t handle the addition. They came out and put together a proposal and I was impressed with the professionalism and candor. They were not the least expensive, but definitely the best value. Beautiful work and their people were great.”  —  Robert G.

Residential Electrical FAQs

What do electrical meters do?

Electrical meters record how much electricity your home uses in kilowatt-hours. Older meters use a clock-like gear mechanism to indicate the amount of energy used on a series of dials, while modern meters use digital sensors and displays.

These numbers can be compared to your monthly utility bills to verify and track energy usage. For help determining where your meter is and how to read it, talk to our team at Lon Lockwood.

How do I read my electric meter?

To determine your energy usage, record the number present on each dial of your electrical meter. The dials will feature a range from 0 to 9. If the dial is between two numbers, write down the lower of the two numbers.

If the dial is directly on a number, look to the next dial to the right. If the right dial is over 0, record the exact number indicated on the first dial. If the right dial has not passed 0, write down one less than the number indicated on the first dial.

Once all dials have been read, record this number and subtract a previous reading to determine the amount of energy used over that period

How often should I replace my smoke alarm?

The National Fire Protection Association recommends you replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years.

Where is the electrical meter located?

In most cases, your electrical meter will be outside your home, typically mounted on an exterior wall. If you’re unsure of its location, look for the nearest electrical pole and follow the lines back to your home.

Some utility providers will mount the meter on the pole itself, while others may mount the meter inside your home, near the main electrical panel.

What is an electrical riser?

The electrical riser is the conduit that extends from your meter or main electrical panel to the overhead power lines. This conduit houses and protects the power lines as they enter your electrical meter.

A weatherhead at the top is designed to keep out the elements. If the riser is ever damaged by storms, fallen branches, or an accident, call our team at Lon Lockwood for repairs.

Does my electrical panel have a riser?

Generically, the riser is connected to the electrical meter, and a separate conduit connects the meter to the main electrical panel. In some installations, a riser may extend from the electrical panel before it transitions outdoors to the meter.
