Outdoor Electrical Safety

Now that the weather is nicer and temperatures are heating up, we’ll be spending a lot more time outdoors. From planting and gardening to barbecuing with friends and family, it’s important to understand that electrical hazards can occur outside.

Below, you’ll find some facts and tips to help prevent some common outdoor electrical hazards:

Steer Clear of Power Lines

Without power lines, we wouldn’t receive electricity to our homes, but they can be potential safety hazards. Before planting trees around your property, it’s a smart idea to speak with professionals to make sure there’s enough room for them to grow. Although you may not be able to see them, power lines also run underground so call 811 before you start digging.

Installing Outdoor Outlets

Anything that requires electricity outdoors, needs an outdoor outlet. Be sure to have ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) installed so if an electronic device comes in contact with water, power is automatically cut off. You should also have weatherproof boxes or covers put on all outdoor outlets to protect them from the elements.

At Lon Lockwood Electric, we can help with all of your outdoor electrical needs. Give us a call today to speak with one of our expert electricians and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter!
