Portable Generator Safety

Did you know that between 1992 and 2012, nearly 80% of the 931 carbon monoxide deaths were associated with generators? That’s a very large number if you ask us, and most of these deaths could have been prevented by following a few basic safety guidelines.

If you plan on using a portable generator this season, be sure to follow these tips:

  • Generators need to be out in the open. NEVER operate them inside your home, garage or other enclosed spaces.
  • These pieces of equipment are designed for temporary usage. They should not be used as a permanent power solution.
  • A transfer switch must be installed prior to using a generator. Never plug them into household wiring.
  • Using an extension cord? Make sure it has 3 prongs and is rated for the intended load.
  • Make sure the CO alarms inside your home are working properly.
  • It is recommended that generators are kept at least 20 feet away from all windows, doors and vents.

It’s vital to take generator safety seriously. If you have specific questions or need an expert electrician to install your generator, contact Lon Lockwood Electric today!
