In the market for your first home? What an exciting time in your life! We understand however, that purchasing a home is quite the investment and you’ll want to make sure you make a well-educated decision.
When purchasing a home, there are several things to keep an eye on: interest rates, budgets, to the future of every room’s décor. And one thing all homes have that can often be overlooked is the electrical system. Here’s what you need to look out for:
This is the nerve center for all things electrical in and out of the home. Each one of the fuses/circuit breakers in the box are designed to automatically shut down if they become overloaded.
Watch out for outdated boxes…
The first form of fuses boxes had screw-in fuses that looked more or less like the bottom part of a light bulb. Ever hear the term “blew a fuse?” This is where the saying originated and if you’re looking at an older home, there’s a good chance your electrical system could need future repair.
Electrical outlets and wall switches can also give you major headaches down the road. Check for dark spots on outlets, a sure sign of sparks, as well as wall switches that do not work properly. Both issues above can be a sign of improper, and/or, loose wiring.
If the home has an attic, ask to see the conditions. While up there you can take a quick look at the wiring. Check for little grey boxes with wires running in and out of them. These are called junction boxes and have become the new standard when wiring a home. This is the safest and proper way to wire a home. If there aren’t any in plain sight, be sure to ask questions!
