Electrical Safety in the Garage

Thousands of homeowners use the fall season to perform maintenance outside their homes. And for many of them, the garage or utility room is their central hub. Whether it’s choosing the right tool for the job or storing summer essentials it’s important to keep your garage safe from electrical hazards this time of year.

Here are some tips to keep in mind to prevent fires and protect your home with a focus on the garage or utility room:

  • GFCI outlets should be installed wherever electricity has the possibility to come in contact with water.
  • All electrical equipment including trimmers and other power tools should be kept in dry areas that are out of reach children and animals.
  • Using an extension cord for work outside? Make sure it’s labeled for outdoor use and be sure to follow all manufacturer’s instructions.
  • NEVER use a generator inside the garage. They give off carbon monoxide so they should only be used out in the open.
