How To Change A Switch Plate

Is looking at that broken or damaged light switch plate driving you crazy? Well, it could be doing more than just making you crazy if you leave it alone any longer – it could be a serious hazard. Cracks, chips or other visible damage to a switch plate should be dealt with right away.

Believe it or not, changing out a damaged switch plate is quite simple. You just need the right tools and you MUST use extreme caution:

  • Step 1: Check for wear and tear. As we mentioned earlier, any visible signs of damage can be a major red flag. In addition, check the fit of the current switch plate. Does it fit properly? Are any wires visible?
  • Step 2: Most switch plates are fastened to the wall with one of two screws. Simply unscrew the plate using a screwdriver.
  • Step 3: It’s a good idea to take a photo of the switch or take the old plate with you when you go shopping for a replacement. This will help you choose the correct size and configuration to make sure the new switch plates fits properly.
  • Step 4: Turn the power off and begin screwing the new plate into the wall. We recommend screwing each screw half way and making sure the plate lines up properly before tightening.
