Summertime storms are known to be fierce and relentless often rolling through neighborhoods without much warning. If you’re lucky, the power will stay on but oftentimes the storm takes electricity out with it.
If you experience a power outage in your neck of the woods, don’t panic – follow these guidelines until the lights come back on:
- Never go near downed power lines. Call 9-1-1 to report the emergency and then call the electric company. Even though the wires are down, they can still be electrified and lethal.
- Keep flashlights handy. Avoid using candles and other sources of fire because they can be dangerous. Keep all light switches and electronic devices powered off to avoid a power surge when the electricity turns back on.
- Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed. The more you open them, the more of a chance your food has to spoil.
- Drive carefully. Pay attention to street signs and be extra alert. Remember that traffic signals may be out during a power outage.
